Here one can cite the loss of political certainty surrounding the UK coalition government and the loss of boundaries that once contained and defined the perimeters of political parties and their respective ideologies. Contempt that has emerged as a response to such shifts and are linked to what the government are doing by way of policy and cuts etc (likened by Andrew Rawnsley and Vince Cable to a ‘Maoist revolution’). Such contempt also relates to concern about the loss of containment regarding a perceived breakdown in a social democratic consensus about the boundaries of the public/private sector, and broader anxieties about a post–ideological politics, where the distinctions between the political parties are often blurred and unclear. Celebrity and ‘spin’ play a key role in communicating policy, something that was particularly evident in the run up to the election. Contempt in this context is linked to the disillusionment about the broken promises of that election, particularly in relation to the Lib-Dem leader Nick Clegg, as evidenced in the recent student demonstrations. As Dan Chambers’ films about Boris Johnson and David Cameron illustrate, with the so many Etonians in the Cabinet, the dimensions of the British class have once more come to the fore, and notions of contempt are relevant here too in this context.

Psychoanalytic contexts
Drawing on D. W Winnicott ‘s psychoanalytic theory of ‘Transitional Phenomena’ from his book Playing and Reality (1971), one can begin to think about political culture and its communication systems – particularly in the field of social networking, as facilitating in a positive manner, new complex spaces for play and creativity. Yet, in a more pessimistic vein, one can – following Christopher Lasch’s thesis, in his book the Culture of Narcissism (1979) - argue that new modes of political communication and personality politics
promote a shallow, narcissistic culture, where modes of empowerment are promoted at the expense of more meaningful if challenging forms of object relating and the capacity to tolerate good enough leadership can be seen as an example of this. The psychoanalytic ideas of Melanie Klein might also be useful to explore the anxieties, projections and desires that are utilised through new modes of political communication.

In his book Emotional Governance (2007), Barry Richards argues that the mediatisation of politics has become increasing emotional and that the application of psychoanalytic ideas to the emotionalisation of politics are pertinent. For Richards, Broadcast News bears a particular responsibility to contain and process the anxieties and ambivalences of the public in order to deflect the paranoid anxieties which emerge as a response to the conflicts of late modernity. The media coverage of ‘The war against terror’ can be seen as a key example of what he sees as a ‘therapeutic’ process, where the media may or may not facilitate the working through of vengeful narcissistic fantasies, towards more reparative impulses for understanding and dialogue. There may well be links here with the themes of Gabrielle Rifkind’s work in the field of conflict resolution in the Middle East.

This session will bring together a group analyst, a filmmaker and academic to explore some of these issues from their own perspectives, with a view to finding points of dialogue and shared interest between them.

Suggested Discussion Points/Guiding Questions
· What is the relationship between contempt and containment in UK political culture?
· How might psychoanalytic understandings of containment and contempt be applied to examples from the contemporary political scene?
· What forms of media can best represent the dilemmas of contemporary politics?
· Has politics and its coverage in the news become more overtly ‘emotional’ ?

Our speakers:

Dan Chambers
Since starting Blink with Justine Kershaw, Dan Chambers has Executive Produced ‘Ancients Behaving Badly’, ‘True Stories’, ‘Chinese Food In Minutes’; he’s overseen ‘Miliband of Brothers’ and ‘When Boris Met Dave’ and, along with Justine Kershaw, ‘Extraordinary Animals’, ‘The Lion Cub From Harrods’, and ‘The Great Sperm Race’. Before forming Blink, Dan was Five’s Director of Programmes from 2003 to 2006. From 2001 to 2003, he was Five’s Controller of Factual where he created the RTS award-winning history strand, ‘Revealed’, commissioned World War I in Colour, Pompeii Live, Kings & Queens, and feature shows including Britain’s Worst Driver. As Director of Programmes he was also responsible for Banged Up Abroad, The Gadget Show, Fifth Gear, and The Hotel Inspector. Dan graduated from Oxford University, and began his television career in 1991 as a researcher on current affairs shows including Panorama and Dispatches. The psychoanalytic ideas of Melanie Klein might also be useful to explore the anxieties, projections and desires that are utilised through new modes of political communication.

In his book Emotional Governance (2007), Barry Richards argues that the mediatisation of politics has become increasing emotional and that the application of psychoanalytic ideas to the emotionalisation of politics can help us understand this development. For Richards, Broadcast News bears a particular responsibility to contain and process the anxieties and ambivalences of the public in order to deflect the paranoid anxieties that emerge as a response to the conflicts of late modernity.

· Have politics and its coverage in the news become more overtly ‘emotional’?

SOCIAL NETWORKING & DIGITAL NARCISSISM

For many, social networking has become a key part of every day life. Some argue that the development of Web2.0 in the form of information sharing and communicating through blogs, facebook, twitter, etc, provides positive new opportunities for playful self expression, creativity, and even self-realisation. Alongside the imaginary potentials of social media for the self and the inner world, Charles Leadbeater in We Think (2009) argues that digital media and social networking allows for the democratisation of communication in a number of personal and political contexts, thereby challenging the old hierarchies of an elitist media.

Yet others have been less keen on the growth of social networking, and see it in less utopian terms. Here it is said that social networking promotes unhealthy narcissism and self-obsession on the part of users who have lost the capacity to cope with the challenges of ‘real’ embodied relationships. Instead, friends are gathered like trophies, thereby avoiding the risks and disappointments of meeting and communicating with people face to face, or perhaps through the more considered medium of the pen. In his book The Cult of the Amateur (2007), Andrew Keen explores the notion of ‘digital narcissism’ in relation to the rise of social networking and links it to the rise of vacuous celebrity culture where anybody can be a star – an ‘ego caster’ – where the banalities of one’s everyday life are broadcast to the world.

The kind of issues which interest us at the Media and Inner World network relate to the links between social networking and the self and the implications of -say - writing a blog or communicating on facebook for meaningful object relations. Drawing on D. W Winnicott ‘s psychoanalytic theory of ‘Transitional Phenomena’ from his book Playing and Reality (1971), one can begin to think about the web and social networking as a facilitating space for play, creativity and psychological growth. Yet, in a more pessimistic vein, one can – following Christopher Lasch’s thesis in his book the Culture of Narcissism (1979) - argue that social networking promotes a narcissistic culture where consumer-friendly notions of therapy and empowerment are promoted at the expense of more meaningful if challenging forms of object relating. The work of psychoanalytic work of Freud and Melanie Klein might also be useful to explore the anxieties, defences and desires that are utilised when communicating on the internet and the projections that are utilised when online.

This session will bring together a therapist, a webcaster and an academic to explore these issues from their own perspectives, with a view to hopefully finding points of dialogue and shared interest between them.

Some Questions for Debate and Discussion
· Does social networking promote narcissism and what are the psychosocial implications of this?
· What is the relationship between social networking and ‘therapy culture’?
· What are the therapeutic implications of social networking?

Follow MiW on Facebook and Twitter (@M_i_W)

ADVERTISING, DISAPPOINTMENT & DESIRE

Advertising has been analysed from a number of perspectives, yet most will agree that its images and messages have been significant in helping to shape experience and identities in every day life. Advertising has always played on the emotions of consumers, yet today, the poignant appeal of ads become evermore explicit as they invite us to explore a wide range of emotions – from the tearfulness of saying goodbye to loved ones at an airport –to the imagined highs of identifying with a community of parents and children dancing around in an apparently utopian rural setting before munching into McDonalds burgers. The themes of therapy are also there in ads that send up the hypnotized patient who lies on the analytic couch, recalling his life through images of past iconic ads. Such themes also coincide with a growing preoccupation with emotion and therapy within popular culture more widely. This therapeutic ‘turn’ is linked perhaps, to anxieties about social and cultural change and also new opportunities for therapeutic self-exploration within the shifting context of late modernity. Feelings of loss, vulnerability and disappointment, which often accompany contemporary cultural experience, may be psychologically defended against or explored creatively through different aspects of mediatised popular culture, and the iconic images and slogans of advertising are significant here. Advertising uses a range of strategies such as nostalgia (Hovis bread), sexuality (Cadburys Flake) escape (British Airways) and narcissism (L’Oreal -‘because I'm worth it’) to assuage disappointment, stir up desire, and shore up a fragile sense of self. The relationships between the growth of therapy culture, identity, emotion and advertising provide the context for the MiW forthcoming roundtable discussion on ‘Advertising, Disappointment and Desire’. This roundtable discussion brings together leading thinkers and practitioners in the areas of advertising practice and research and psychotherapy to explore themes and we warmly welcome everyone to come and take part.

Recommended Reading:
Campbell, C. The following list of questions and perspectives offers a starting point for thinking about these questions. Please feel free to add your comments/create new pages to start the debate rolling!

· What is the relationship between taste, hunger and the media?
· What is our emotional relationship to food and how is this represented in the media?
· How are the pleasures of eating constructed today? How have they changed and what does this tell us about society?
· What do the different images of taste tell us about culture and society?
· How is our relationship to food shaped by class, gender and ethnicity?
· How might we use what we know as therapists from our work within eating problems to illuminate our struggle with consumerism?
· The accepted approach to over-eating is to go on a diet. Fat people are reviled and feared because they are seen as greedy and out of control, while anorexics are often secretly admired for their will of iron, their capacity to conquer their physical desires, mind over body. The fashion industry, and by extension the media, are complicit in this.
· Diets don't work in the long term because this route is about behavioural control and deprivation. Early unmet needs within vital early relationships may re-emerge in uncontrollable binges on food, sex or drugs, or numerous other ways in which we attempt to simultaneously get pleasure as well as kill pain.
· If we can stop consuming the earth for a second, and listen to our collective hungers, where might we go? What is it that we so fear, and what is it that we long for? How might the media engage with this?
· Our collective responses are very split. We are trying to tackle an obesity epidemic, yet our magazines, newspapers and TV are still enticing us back into ‘naughty’ food. As awareness of our global crisis is rightly increasing in leaps and bounds, and we are encouraged to go on a ‘green diet’ to reduce our carbon emissions...but the media is still full of enticing messages for us to spend carbon.
· Therapists know that something rather different happens when we stop trying to control/shut down and start listening to, and unpacking, the full range of hungers within - from physical bodily hungers for taste and feeding the senses - to emotional hungers for relationship, to spiritual hungers for mystery, meaning and purpose. These hungers run through our lives from early experience to the present day, from individual through family to culture. How can we begin to support each other in listening to what will satisfy our hungers amidst our hectic and distracted lives?

PARANOIA AND TELEVISION

On Weds 16th Sept, Trevor Hearing will chair a round table featuring the following speakers:

Laurence Marks (TV comedy and drama writer)
Hugh Ortega Breton (academic, Roehampton University)
Karen Ainsbury (Group Analyst)
Paul Watson (Documentary maker)
Prof Barry Richards (Bournemouth University) - Respondent.

All welcome!

The Screening Room, Weymouth House, Bournemouth University, Talbot Campus 1-4pm.

According to The International Dictionary of Psychoanalysis, paranoia has individual and institutional, social and cultural forms and determinants. There is probably at least a germ of paranoia in everyone, which may be activated in regressive states with increased vulnerability. Clinically, paranoia may be found in mild transient forms, paranoid states of varying degree and duration, fixed paranoid traits and paranoid character, and borderline schizophrenia. The range of paranoid conditions doubtless depends upon constitutional, characterological, and experiential variables.

· How does watching television create feelings of paranoia in the audience?
· From the film maker’s and writer’s perspectives, what techniques are used to create feelings of paranoia in the audience?
· What the pleasures and anxieties of paranoid television for audiences and film/programme makers?
· Are some television genres inherently paranoid?
· How might television prevent individual or collective feelings of paranoia?
· What is the relationship between paranoid television and paranoid societies?
· Is contemporary society particularly paranoid and how does this relate to the nature and content of television output?
· How have certain moments in history helped to create paranoid television?
· What creates paranoia in those who perform on television?
· How can psychoanalysis and psychotherapeutic ways of thinking contribute to our understanding of paranoia and the affective experience of watching television in an emotive culture?
· Do programmes sometimes work psychologically as containers that help us to interpret and process paranoid feelings and cultural experience in more or less manageable ways?
· How can we draw on psychoanalytic ideas to formulate an understanding of the relationships between feelings of paranoia and television output?

To discuss these themes and others, this round table brings together experts from television practice, academic criticism and group therapy work. Some argue that the development of Web2.0 in the form of information sharing and communicating through blogs, facebook, twitter, etc , provide positive new opportunities for playful self expression, creativity, and even self-realisation.

The work of psychoanalytic work of Freud Melanie Klein might also be useful to explore the anxieties, defences and desires that are utilised when communicating on the internet and the projections that are utilised when on line.

This session will bring together a therapist, a webcaster and an academic to explore these issues from their own perspectives, with a view to hopefully finding points of dialogue and shared interest between them.

Suggested Discussion Points/Guiding Questions
· Does social networking promote narcissism and what are the psychosocial implications of this?
· What is the relationship between social networking and ‘therapy culture’?
· What are the therapeutic implications of social networking?

EMOTIONAL WORK OF CINEMA

For discussions concerning emotion and popular cinema
DISCUSSION on SATURDAY 9TH MAY will run for 2 hours at the Everyman Cinema in Hampstead. There will be a montage of clips to illustrate the emotional power and specificity of cinema. The discussion will initially take the form of a round table and the discussants will include an academic, an analyst or therapist and someone from inside the world of film itself. Tomis also an accomplished character comedian. In 2003 he duped the SKY ONE program'Guilty Secrets of the 1980's' into believing he in fact was a northern loner by the name of Steve Matthews. In this years 'Big Brother Celebrity Hijack' Leigh saw an opportunity to unleash Tom's character Martin Phillips on the Big Brother contestants. With Leigh in the guise of his alter ego Keith Lemon. Tom played 12 year old Martin, a hyperactive awkward lad Keith was looking after for the day. This was no mean feet, considering Toms 6-7, 18 stone frame. Yet the contestants and the public along with some of the production team fell for it. Since this elaborate scheme Tom has worked on a number of new characters, appearing in Russell Brands Comedy Live Presents with Leigh’s Craig David character.

Michelle De Swarte
Comedian
Having been based between New York and London for nearly a decade; 2008 saw Michelle’s debut as a TV presenter in the UK when she co-hosted Princess Production’s ‘The Fashion Show’ on ITV2. Her memorable appearance on BBC3’s ‘Best and Worst of 2008’ made the most of her brilliant off the cuff humorous style. Early 2009 saw her build on that success by hosting a pilot for the US version of the show for MTV. Her down to earth personality and fast, fun delivery has inspired her to try her hand at stand up comedy and she made her debut at the world famous Comix comedy club in New York in March 2009. Michelle has recently joined John Noel’s agency as new up-and-coming comedian. She had a very successful gig at the Monkey Business Club in Camden in January 2010 which was widely acclaimed by critics.

Dan Schreiber
Comedian
Dan is a stand-up comedian, radio producer, and also a writer for both radio and television. But jokes can elude these censors -- to create the pleasure of unearned release of psychic energy, which is discharged in the form of laughter. He explains why jokes tend to be compact and condensed, with double meanings: this is to fool the childishly simple-minded censors, who see only innocent surface meanings and fail to penetrate the disguise of the forbidden wishes.

(Marvin and Minsky, 1980), http://web.media.mit.edu/~minsky/papers/jokes.cognitive.txt

What is the psychology of humour and jokes? Why do we laugh and why do some of us want to make others laugh? What is it that prompts us to laugh at others and make them the butt of jokes? In his 1905 work Jokes and their Relation to the Unconscious (1905) Freud argues that comedy is often used as a way of communicating anxiety and managing hostility. As with dreams, jokes are deeply symbolic and we can use them to learn more about the unconscious and the forbidden wishes and fantasies, which shape and mediate human experience. Like spontaneous slips of the tongue, these wishes find expression through jokes and humour in the course of our everyday lives. Our responses to those jokes can also tell something about the pleasures, longings and fears that influence who we are and the cultures in which we live.

Our event aims to explore these questions through a dialogue between psychotherapists, academics and leading contemporary comedians. Comedians use the symbolic power of humour to express a range of popular, cultural and personal dilemmas for TV and theatre audiences today. When we watch them perform, comedians such as Eddie Izzard, Victoria Wood, Michael Macintyre or Russell Brand allow audiences to experience a range of emotions from outrage to pleasure – thus providing a means of working through the many anxieties and frustrations that permeate contemporary culture. Alternatively, from the perspective of the comedian, what are the pleasures of making people laugh – and what makes people laugh today and what doesn’t and why?

Discussion Points
· Is there a relationship between humour, laughter and loss?
· What is the relationship between humour, laughter and anxiety?
· What makes people laugh today and why?
· What does it feel like to make people laugh?
· What are the unconscious roots of humour?

University as Transitional Space

Please respond to these suggestions or make suggestions of your own.

The importance of this 'event'/process is that it produces dialogue and debate, so all perspectives are welcome! ·

The university as a ‘good enough’ environment; teaching psychoanalysis as providing a space for not knowing; who is ‘qualified’ to do this?

Is it possible to provide a space for ‘play’ in the university setting?
