Social networking and the Long Now

According to the About page on their website (longnow.org) "the Long Now Foundation hopes to provide counterpoint to today's 'faster/cheaper' mind set and promote 'slower/better' thinking."

The term Long Now was coined by Brian Eno when he moved to New York City and found that "'here' and 'now' meant 'this room' and 'this five minutes' as opposed to the larger here and longer now that he was used to in England."

So a concern about very short term social interactions with little emotional commitment is not new to social media. For Twitter and Facebook time is still very short - about the length of time a tweet stays visible on your preferred Twitter application or a post stays visible on your news feed. But place does stretch out to cover a wider world.

Do you find this valuable?
